After examination and diagnosis, Dr. Darlene Buan-Basit will discuss and recommend specific treatment options:
ADJUSTMENTS AND MOBILIZATION
Spinal manipulative therapy is used for joint dysfunctions or malignments. Precise pressure, exact force (high velocity and low amplitude) and line of drive (angle) are used for spinal and extremity joint adjustment.
Joint mobilizations are also used for both spine, ribs and joints in the body that are fixated
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine involving the insertion of acupuncture needles into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. Contemporary medical acupuncture is the modern day approach. Dr. Darlene Buan-Basit is trained in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Contemporary medicine acupuncture.
Acupuncture needles are designed to allow them to slide smoothly through tissues, and minimize bleeding or damage to underlying structures. A dull, heavy, or aching feeling often occurs when the needle is correctly placed. This is referred to as ‘de Qi. Recent MRI studies indicate that there is a difference in the response of the brain to needling with and without the de Qi sensation.
The needles are left in place for 15-30 minutes. Electro-acupuncture can also be used: the needles are electrically stimulated by various frequencies and voltages by attachment to a battery-powered machine. Low frequency stimulation (2-4 Hz) results in a slow onset of pain relief that outlasts the treatment for hours to days and is often cumulative by repeating treatments. High frequency stimulation (80-200 Hz) results in a pain-blocking effect that is fast in onset but does not usually outlast the stimulation.
SOFT TISSUE THERAPY
Different techniques can be used to reduce the pain that results from hypersensitive muscles. Dr. Darlene has studied and regularly uses these techniques during treatments. These include
CRAINAL SACRAL THERAPY
TRIGGER POINT THERAPY
ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE OR ART
PROPRIOCEPTIVE NEUROMUSCULAR FACILITATION PNF
Laser, ultrasound, inferential current and muscle stimulation, electroacupuncture
CUSTOM FOOT ORTHOTICS
A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance.
Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes - they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.
